The Pie League 2019

2019 PL Challenge Cup Round 1 - Skipton v Steeton

Saturday, 23rd March

Adjudicators: JK, PL, AB

Timing: 10:40 and 12:00

Prices: 1.20 and 1.25

The Adjudicators were looking forward to seeing the much-praised Steeton Pie in PL action for the first time ever, and it was perhaps partly due to this excitement, that on a sunny spring morning, in perfect driving conditions, the driving Adjudicator may have been slightly over the speed limit, when he spotted the Video Van parked in the lay-by on the stretch of dual carriageway between Steeton and Skipton. He should find out within the week.

Skipton fielded a different Pie, to the one which had almost carried them into the PL play-offs last season. And this decision was quickly questioned when the tasting began. The pies were hot, and the liquid jelly, of which there appeared to be copious amounts, flowed out of the pies, in every direction. The crust, quite dry and pleasantly crisp on the top, was a little bit soft from the liquid jelly at the base of the pie. The meat content was a bit on the small side…..which probably explains the volume of jelly…..and was of a darker colour than usual. The taste was good, described as “peppery” and even “haggis-like”………and helped to make up for the difficulties of the actual eating.

Halftime drinks were taken in The Devonshire, where this Adjudicator tried a Pale Rider, (Kelham Island Brewery), and found it’s citrusy, hoppy taste, particularly refreshing for the time of day.

Excitement mounted as the Adjudicators drove into Steeton………….only to turn to disappointment and then despair, as it became clear that the shop was closed. The Adjudicators drove on, heavy of heart, but intent on seeking out a local substitute……….and shortly came across one in Crosshills. This Pie was cold, perhaps even overly chilled. In size, and in meat volume it exceeded the Skipton offering, but both crust and meat seemed bland in comparison. The Adjudicators had no hesitation in quickly awarding the tie to Skipton.

Post-match drinks were taken at the Busfeild Arms in East Morton, where it proved pleasant enough for the Adjudicators to take their drinks outside, in the sunshine.
