The Pie League 2018

Brighouse v Cullingworth 16 June 2018

Saturday, 16th June

Adjudicators: AB, JK, (PL present for the second half, but not adjudicating)

Timing: 08:50 and 11:00

Prices: 1.40 and 1.30

This was the battle for the PLS Wooden Spoon, but as both teams had been involved in close games with the undefeated leaders Cleckheaton, the Adjudicators were hoping for a game of some quality. They were left sorely disappointed.

Brighouse opened with a cold pie, despite the early start. One Adjudicator noted that both pies came from the overdone end of the display. The other Adjudicator found the pastry almost bitter in taste…..though this view was not shared by his fellow Adjudicator. Both found the pies heavily over-salted, and when one Adjudicator lost the top of his crust, to reveal a mass of unappetising jelly…..both Adjudicators had no hesitation in showing red cards to both pies.

Half time drinks were taken in The George at Cullingworth, where the Adjudicators were dismayed to learn that the 10am Saturday Breakfasts were no more……..and that opening times had reverted to 12:00. Luckily, the door was open, and the Adjudicators were warmly greeted and quickly served by friendly staff, at the early time of 10:30am. As they drank their pints, they were introduced to a young man who had eaten three George Bellybuster Breakfasts, though not all on the same day.

Cullingworth did not have to offer much, to overcome the Brighouse……and indeed they did not. A fairly average cold pie, was enough to earn them the win. Post match drinks were taken in The Brown Cow in Bingley, where PL and AB spent some time puzzling over differing high-water points scattered around the pub, from the 2015 Boxing Day Flood……..which I believe ranged from 4’ 8” through to 5’ 10”
