Ilkley v Otley
Saturday, 24th March
Adjudicators: JK, PL
Timing: 11:05 and 12:55
Prices: 1.30 and 1.25
The last game before the Easter Break, this was the long awaited “Wharfedale Derby”, with Ilkley coming into the game as favourites, after an easy win at Baildon, and some impressive pre-season form.
And they maintained their consistency of form, with a nicely warm pie, containing a small amount of soft jelly, and a substantial, nicely textured, and pleasantly seasoned meat content. The pastry was good……tasty and firm, without being over crusty.
At half-time, the Adjudicators agreed their approval, and went in search of an open pub……which proved to be an unexpectedly long search, even at the late time of 10 past 11 o’clock. Fortunately, as before at other venues, TJ Wetherspoon proved reliable in catering to Adjudicator needs….and they were able to sink a quick one in the Lister Arms.
As the second half got under way, it became clear the Otley had no intention of surrendering to their more fancied rivals. Their pie was warm, (as always), and tasty……..envied by onlookers, one of whom confirmed that these were good pies, and she would get some for tea…….before letting slip that she’d scoff at least one, sat on a Market Bench.
The Adjudicators were unable to reach an immediate decision……and chose to take full advantage of the “Decision-by-the-end-of-the-Post-Match-Pint” Rule. This was taken at the Royalty, on the Chevin, and overlooking the highest airport in England. One adjudicator very much enjoyed his Staropramen, which is served in a fine looking glass, with a story embossed on the side, telling the tale of its Origins……back in 1869. After some debate, the Adjudicators reached a unanimous verdict. In their view, both pies were of a high quality, and Otley can be justifiably proud of their pie. But…..the Adjudicators eventually agreed, that in the almost every aspect, (crust, meat, jelly…..), the Ilkley had an, admittedly small, and sometimes very small, advantage.
Congratulations to Ilkley, this season’s Kings Of The Wharfe. And no shame in defeat for Otley………unfortunately, a good Pie came up against a Pie, which was slightly better on the day.
No game next week…….Easter Break.
